Mehmood Akhtar Raises Alarm on Western Agenda in Dramas | Six Screens

Veteran actor Mehmood Akhtar recently spoke out strongly about today’s Pakistani television dramas. He argued that a Western agenda is quietly influencing our storytelling—and thus weakening local culture. In his view, dramas once reflected our roots. Yet, now they rely on foreign styles and values so much.

The actor also highlighted that previous Pakistani dramas had messages and links to our cultural values. However, he claims the shift began when productions started mimicking Western and Indian formats.

Consequently, the stories lost their cultural authenticity. The artist warned that if this trend continues, television will no longer feel like it belongs to us—it will feel imported.

Moreover, Akhtar said he sees younger viewers growing disconnected from Pakistani identity. Further added that many dramas now prioritise glamour, shock value and commercial success instead of meaningful content. As a result, he believes the true essence of our drama industry is at risk.

Six Screen’s Take

At Six Screen Entertainment, we believe Mehmood’s message urges the industry to reflect. Indeed, while innovation matters, our television must still speak to Pakistani experiences. When channels chase global look-and-feel over local truth, viewers sense the gap immediately.

However, Akhtar isn’t against modern themes. Rather, he calls for a balance—for stories that are fresh yet grounded. He said writers and producers can blend change with heritage, instead of copying from foreign values.

Final Thought

Mehmood Akhtar’s remarks are a wake-up call. Pakistani drama faces a choice: stay rooted and leave foreign values aside. We sincerely hope the industry chooses the previous format again. Because when our stories lose their voice, an important part of who we are fades with them.
